Road Trip: Bella Sicilia to Alberobello on a 4 day weekend.

www.ShakyraCanchaney.com

A few weeks ago we returned from an amazing road trip to Alberobello, home to the iconic stone hut roof truli and a UNESCO world heritage center, located in the Puglia (or Apulia) region of Italy (right by the heel)

Driving for 6 hours is not exactly how I would choose to do my 4 day weekend but let me tell you, the drive was so easy and beautiful! It sure did not feel like 6 hours! oh wait, is that because I was the passenger??? haha My husband did not complain at all and my son did amazing too (His favorite part of the drive was playing road trip BINGO! and seeing a double rainbow)

First, this blog post might get lengthy but I want to make sure I give you as much details as I know. All the tid bits of goody information that hopefully might be helpful to you so you can also plan your easy road trip through beautiful southern Italy and enjoy that side of the mainland.
We left Thursday afternoon and came back on a Monday after beach time.

The drive:
First, we took the Messina ferry to mainland (Villa San Giovanni) in the Reggio Calabria area.
The ferry was pretty easy. You arrive to the port, I got out of the car while my husband waited in the car, walked to that little booth in between the lanes and purchased my ticket (It was about 75€ for roundtrip with the car) If you are returning in 4 days I believe it is or sooner then your ticket would cost less. You drive up to the line, wait till the ferry arrives if it hasn’t and they will direct you all the way till you park inside the ferry, you can stay in the car for the short ride (about 20 minutes) or you can use that time for potty breaks and to grab a quick bite. They have arancini, panini, pastries, cafe…) Say ciao Sicilia! See you soon, welcome to mainland! 🙂
Once you are getting closer to the mainland everyone starts getting back in their cars (make sure you are in your car before the ferry arrives to the port cause they move quick! ) You arrive to the Villa San Giovanni port and from here you only have a little over 4hrs left of drive! 🙂 We only stopped to get gas cause some gas stations might not take gas coupons so we wanted to be prepared and with a full tank.

Day 1: Thursday we drove all the way to Arberobello which we picked as our center point and do road trips from there. It was very centric to everything we wanted to do and short drives to amazingly stunning sites, and honestly, driving back to Alberobello in the evenings to stroll the little town and have dinners there was magical. I was debating between staying right in the middle of Alberobello town in a trulo or right outside the town center. I decided to stay right outside so we could stay in a property with private parking and a pool. I am so glad we did! I absolutely LOVED our little truli house in Fascino Antico Trulli B&B. It was a 1-2 minutes drive to the town. Once you get to the town, there are pay parking areas. There is no restaurant in this family owned B&B but they do provide delicious breakfast which they brought every morning to our truly. Keep in mind truli are smaller than the average house or apartment. I liked calling it our very cozy trulo.
www.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.com

We arrived at night, was promptly and warmly checked in and headed out to Alberobello centro for dinner right away. We had dinner at Ristorante Pizzeria Il Pinnacolo. Seems small and quaint but there are more sitting areas in other spots in the restaurant too. Food was delicious (we went back on a different day!)

Day 2: We had a very nice breakfast with a good variety. They brought it right to our trulo. After breakfast we got ready and headed to ZooSafari which is a drive-through zoo only about 20 min nice drive from Arberobello. This zoo was a super highlight for me! I thought it was really neat. We didn’t tell my son we were going here so he was really surprised and loved it 🙂 In the zoo it self you don’t spend so much time, I’m thinking maybe an hour. Once we were done we parked and walked right over next door to the amusement park Fasanolandia where we spent about 2 hours. It was a really nice day.
www.ShakyraCanchaney.com

www.ShakyraCanchaney.com

After the zoo we were starving!!! We headed to Alberobello town and had a small lunch since everything was pretty much closed for riposo, walked around the town and went to our trulo for some down time. About an hour later we headed right back to Alberobello. Walked ar
ound the town during sunset time… stunning!!!!! Grabbed some freshly mixed juice and fresh fruits from Fruit Box and then we headed to have dinner at Osteria Del Poeta. Nice and beautiful restaurant, looks romantic and food was good.

www.ShakyraCanchaney.comDay 3: In the morning we got to relax and enjoy the surroundings at our trulo home. We then headed to the town of Polignano a Mare, about 30 minutes away. What a gorgeous views and a really good vibe town. We had reservations for lunch at the breath taking bucket list  “Cave restaurant” Ristorante Grotta Palazzese
This was definitely in my bucket list and soooo glad we had the chance to cross it off! STUNNING! BREATHTAKING!  Only open during summer (late spring)
You have to purchase 2 courses minimum. Expect to spend in average about $80 per adult and about 60-70 per kid. Again, this to us was a once in a lifetime experience, checking it off the list type of place. A lot of people like to sit by the front of the cave close to the rail/oceanl but I personally sat on the back, I wanted to take the whole thing in, have a whole view rather than just the outside. Honestly, either place you sit… it will be gorgeous! Take a moment to just breath, live the moment, hours later it will all just be a memory, so take it all in!
All in all this was one of the high lights of our trip, including our very first Italian parking ticket!!! yikes! When we arrived we parked where a bunch of other cars were parked and there was no parking lines (I guess that should’ve been the clue uh?). We thought we were fine till we returned to our car and it was there, all lonely, with a piece of paper waving at us from afar.
On our way back “home” to our trulo we just drove around some of the towns like Fasano (where ZooSafari is) and Locorotondo which is one of Italy’s white town with balconies decorated with beautiful flowers. They even have an annual competition!

www.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.com

After this, guess what we did? Went back to Alberobello town to watch yet again another stunning sunset from the top of the town ❤ If we were not starting our drive back early the next day we most likely would’ve add some of the southern beach towns like Ostuni, Lecce, Otranto, etc… My main reason of this trip was to visit mainly Alberobello so I REALLY wanted to soak it in as much as I could❤www.ShakyraCanchaney.com
Isn’t it stunning?!

www.ShakyraCanchaney.com

Day 4: Tropea… here we come!!!
Starting our drive back to Sicilia I wanted to split the drive and take a break in between. I mean, you are driving through all these stunning towns!! why not right? We picked gorgeous Tropea as our stop. Another STUNNING one! The Tropea beach, oh my! We stayed through the night over at Hotel Residence Piccolo over at Parghelia which was about 5 minute drive to the beach, they have shutters too and included private lido with the stay but we decided to go to the iconic public Tropea beach instead. I have to say, the Piccolo hotel was clean, the room was REALLY clean which is on the top of my stays list BUT for some reason I thought there was a pool, to our surprise it was only two jacuzzi on the top roof which were OK since it was just us in it with the gorgeous Stromboli view (a volcano island) we also had the beach so close so it was fine but if you are looking for a place with a pool then I would look to stay somewhere else.
But look at this room AND the shower!!! When they have a turquoise changing color lighted shower it just was meant to be!!!  😀
www.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.com

The first night we enjoyed the “pool” and gorgeous views and then headed over for a delicious dinner.

www.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.com
Next morning we had breakfast right at the hotel and headed to the beach right away, we could not wait! We stayed there till the afternoon but wanted to stay an extra day so bad! but it was time for reality, to drive back home.
www.ShakyraCanchaney.comwww.ShakyraCanchaney.com

The drive back home was just as easy and smooth.

I recommend this trip to everyone! Easy drive + stunning locations in a long weekend = win win! 🙂

Have you been to any of these towns? What was your favorite one? Any great accomodation you would recommend?

For this beach senior session we went all out, I mean it, all out! all out of the state! haha
Headed to the gorgeous Outer Banks of course!
A stunning sunrise senior session??? Yes please!!!!
We met up really early in the morning to get her make up done and then headed to the beach right before sunrise.
Nothing like “working” (if you have to call it that 😉 ) while listening to the waves crashing, the seagulls singing, the sun rising and warming your skin and the salty air brushing your hair <3

Enjoy these images, feel the air and the sun on your skin, feel the sand and water on your toes, hear the waves crashing, the laughs we had, the behind the sense pants getting soaked in salty water and crabs chasing us!!

OBX Adventures | Part 2

OBX | Outer Banks | Heaven in earth… call it as you wish… all the same!
We went on our OBX adventures for the first time 4 weeks ago. This blog took me a little longer than anticipated… in the middle of it, guess what?
We got to go back to celebrate my husband’s birthday AND for an awesome senior session you’ll be seeing in my blog soon 🙂

Let me start by saying I had no big expectations from the OBX. I’m an island girl, I grew up by the beach.
I’ve been so blessed to have seen some gorgeous beaches in my life so I really didn’t have much expectations from it at all.

This was just something else… OBX is not just a place, it’s a lifestyle, the slower pace, the peaceful quiet mornings, salty air, the memories made, the amazingly sweet and nice people we encountered during our short stay there. I’m not lying when I say some of the nicest people I’ve come across call the OBX home <3

I have to say, this was the first time we took vacations or a mini vacation at that without a big printed schedule of things to do, hours, etc… It felt GOOOOOD!!!!!
I have to thank Amanda Hedgepeth so much for the wonderful reviews she wrote on her blog here and here about the things she loves the most in the OBX.
They helped so much!!!!

Now you guys, grab a cup of coffee, tea, water, wine, whichever you prefer and sit back, enjoy your trip through our OBX adventures.

Check all the way at the bottom of this blog for recommendations on things we tried and places to eat… Mangia! Mangia!
We LOVE trying new places to eat!

Food places we tried and liked:

Mama Kwan’s– This was the very first place we stopped by to eat as soon as we arrived. I had the fish tacos, blackened. They were delicious and crispy, I really enjoyed them.

Jolly Rogers– This place was really neat. Food was good. Long wait so go early and do not wait till you are hungry.

Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant– Had dinner here one of the nights. When we arrived the wait was about 35 so we got a buzzer and headed to the back porch by the water, life music and drinks were available with the most gorgeous sunset while waiting. The buzzer went off maybe 10 minutes in so that was a big pleasant surprise. The food was to die for! The best hush puppies I’ve ever had. It was busy but we were really well taken care of. Apparently there are two restaurants called Miller’s. We got a little confused at first when looking for reviews but I’m linking the one we went to.
Mulligan’s Raw Bar & Grill- First let me say we are huge seafood fans. We love all seafood, raw, cooked, fried but prefer it steamed. We first had guacamole and chips to hold us over cause we were starving. The fresh guacamole was delicious! Then we order a seafood combo, go big or go home! so we went with the “The Mac Daddy!!!!” It had  oysters, clams, shrimp, Snow Crab Legs and Lobster…. hey! we were also celebrating my husband’s birthday remember! haha 😉 I have to say this was the BEST snow crab legs I’ve ever had in my life!!!! OMG! I’m so sorry for the people seating around me if they could hear me raving about it while liking my fingers!!!!

Front Porch Cafe – Looks like we went to the Nags Head location. The ladies there were so patient while we decided what to order. I ordered the Chocolate Bianco Latte and it was yummy! If you follow me on instagram this is where I got my frosty lips lol

Slice Pizzeria– We eat so much pizza in this house that we sure weren’t thinking on going for pizza while on the Outer Banks BUT on our way out we just wanted something quick and inexpensive (thanks to all the OBX shirts I bought right before stopping to eat! haha) The pizza was really good!!! We really liked it there and and with a nice atmosphere. Perfect for a quick stop and keeping it on a budget.

We tried a few other places to eat and ice cream but will keep looking for other options on those 🙂

Places we visited that loved:

Paradise Fun Park – This was ohhh so much fun!!!! It can get pricey but it was all well worth it! My boys were in heaven here and I definitely was too watching their smiles. It was fun for everyone.

Jokey’s Ridge State Park –  It is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. This place was definitely one of my absolute favorites! Wow, put together GORGEOUS, natural beauty AND family fun time and you just get a winner! We went here twice with kite and all! Drop off your flip flops at the “door” and just feel the sand on your toes, feel the evening sunset, do some exercise or just sit down and watch 🙂

Rodanthe House –  This one was for me! 😉 Seeing this house from the Nights in Rodanthe movie in person was so amazing!!! The drive here was so nice too.

Life is Good – I went to do some shopping at the Duck location. I fell in love with a shirt but they didn’t have the size. This beautiful employee went above and beyond without me even asking to make sure I had my shirt. Nelly, THANK YOU, you didn’t just made possible for me to get my shirt, you made me realize that life IS indeed good with people like you in it. Such a gesture you don’t find very often. Everyone at all the Life is good locations I visited while in the Outer Banks were just so amazing <3

Like I said, this was some relaxing mini vacations without packing much at all in our schedules. We just went with the flow and it was the best way to do it and enjoy it.
I hope it helps some! and I hope you enjoyed our OBX adventures. See you again soon Outer Banks! <3

Hugs!!

OBX | A Beautiful Mistake | Virginia Beach Photographer In The Outer Banks

You know that moment when you realize you’ve made a mistake but then you decide to go for it and embrace it anyway only to realize

you’ve created a beautiful mistake?

Well… this is the story…

One early morning, after we were done watching the amazing warm sunrise while visiting the Outer Banks I wanted to go play in the sand with my little one. It was just me, my little one and my camera in my empty bag. I took the lens cap off the camera to start snapping pictures of my boy playing in the sand when…
can you guess??? fog! fog on my lens! I left my lens pen and cloth and EVERYTHING in our place where we were staying.
It was too gorgeous and nice and I honestly didn’t want to waste time walking back, I just wanted to snap a few pictures, put the camera away and enjoy the time with my son. I embraced the foggy view through my lens and still snapped the pictures I wanted.
I knew what was going to happen,
I knew the pictures were going to be all foggy, but had no idea they were going to take my breath away just as it did right there in person, such a beautiful view, the perfect complement for the early morning, quiet time in the OBX.

This was our first time in the Outer Banks and I have another blog coming up next week talking about our experience but let me tell you

it was nothing short of amazing…

Enjoy the quietness of these images, breath in the salty air, feel the warmth of the sunrise on your skin…

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER WHEN…. | Newborn Children Family & Birth Photographer

You know you are a photographer when... www.shakyracanchaney.com

You know you are a photographer when…

Drum roll please…..

  1. No one understands why you spend so much time at the computer.
  2. After a shoot, you swear you are soooo tired and going to do NOTHING when you get home, just relax, but you know you are lying!! You get home, upload memory card and promise yourself to just take a peek…. but that doesn’t happen.
  3. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look, we think of light. “How would I pose my clients here?”
  4. It’s not weird for our children to say things like… “What a beautiful light for photos!” (Yes, this started coming out of my then 4 years old’s mouth lol)
  5. When you try to plan your pregnancy for “low season”
  6. Your brain most often goes at lighting speed with all the ideas and to-do tasks you got.
  7. When you can see the most gorgeous light or get inspire out of the most ordinary/ awkward/ unexpected places.
  8. When attending a wedding as a guest or at an event you pay more attention to the photographer or gear than anything else.
  9. Waking up an hour earlier than normal on a regular day is painful but waking up 3+ hours earlier to get that perfect light… heck yeah!!!
  10. Always thinking… “Oh that would be an awesome shot!”
  11. You spend hundreds of dollars on a light that only turns on for a fraction of a second 😉
  12. You think of the settings you would use at the most random moments.
  13. A stranger ask you to take a picture and you scout for the perfect spot and even ask them to turn a certain way to get the right lighting.
  14. You cringe when you see someone spending hundreds or thousands of dollars in a pair of shoes or purses but can easily spend the same on a camera or gear. Same as said “someone” cringe at you for spending just as much or more on camera gear.
  15. You are very protective of your gear and your heart beats faster than normal if someone else is holding it.
  16. You can stand in the most awkward positions and stretch as you’ve never before just to get “THE SHOT”
  17. When traveling, what a pain to hold your clothes bag but no way you let anyone carry your camera bag! That one is ok to carry 😛
  18. The sound of a camera shutter is like music to your ears…….. sigh… smile… I know you just day dreamed about it 😛
  19. Vacation is more about pictures than relaxing.
  20. When you spend so much time staring at a picture and your eyesight goes from F11 to F1.2 😛

Fantasy Artsy Photo shoot | Botanical Garden – Norfolk – Virginia Beach – Children Photographer

I know I know, I know you’ve heard from me so many times that I work with such amazing people but this time listen up, I work with such AMAZING people!!!!! For real!!!!!  😀
This little princess was so amazingly good to me! She really rocked this photo session.
You know how you picture just the perfect setting, perfect model, perfect outfit, perfect makeup, perfect hair, fun fun and more fun before a session?… Yes! That was it!
It was everything I had envisioned! minus the bright bright sun in the middle of a hot day
(just a little something thrown in there to challenge my self) 😉
It was a gorgeous day but bright as could be. No one cloud.
If you are a photographer most likely you would be praying for a cloud to magically appear
and camp out right in front of the sun for a little while ⛅ but it didn’t… of course haha

Enjoy every single one of this shots, my work, with an open heart, poured on each of these images ♥

16 Empowering Songs

A little while ago on my way to a photo session I started listening to music as I normally do. My body was craving some empowering songs. I was needing music to go with how I was feeling at the moment. I was feeling really pumped up for this session. I started listening to a few of the songs I actually had in my phone. Then I started wishing I had this and that song in my phone to play. That’s when it hit me… I NEED a “Going to shoot a photo session” playlist!!! You know, it’s like doing a big shake it off dance before a public speech or before a meeting or… before a PHOTO SESSION! 😉
Then I created this 16 empowering songs playlist… make you feel good type of songs.
Now, this playlist is the one I personally use on my way to my photo sessions since that moment months ago but I also use it when I need that little push on my back and empowerment telling me “Girl! you got this!!!” This playlist is not what I normally use to edit photos, when I’m editing photos I just play on the background something depending on the mood I’m in at the moment. Being an entrepreneur I’m always trying to find things to keep me moving forward, to keep me focus, to give me empowerment. This playlist has help me so many times!

16 Empowering Songs

Do you have your own “You got this girl!!!” playlist? or is there any songs you think I might be missing here?! Share them in the comments bellow!!! I love adding new songs to my list! Anything to keep us pumped and empowered!

…Enjoy the playlist 🙂

Hanna’s Fairytale ⎥ Virginia Beach Children Photographer

From the moment I started planning this fairytale session I knew right away I would be falling in love with it.
Everything was such an excitement!
Planning it, deciding to go with the carousel, setting new challenges for my self as a children photographer,
having so much fun while shooting this session, seeing how much fun she was having and how light up her face was celebrating this special moment just for her!!!
I am so beyond happy her mama decided to do this for her and get to spend this time just the two of them.

Enjoy Hanna’s Fairytale <3

Gallarza Family ⎥ Virginia Beach Newborn, Children and Family Photographer

I was so excited to get this whole family in front of my camera!
Daddy is back and they are now complete <3
Watching this family go from husband and wife (when I first met them on our second day after arriving to Italy)  to a family of 4 has been such a joy!

These kids… her forever bodyguard <3 Holding his little sister’s hand, protecting her <3

Aren’t they such a beautiful family?!!!

Newborn Zoey ⎥ Virginia Beach, VA Newborn, Children and Family Photographer

This beautiful baby girl stole my heart <3 She was so good to me!!! Her parents were also such a joy to work with. I’m so blessed with the people I get to photograph! Little Zoey was 17 days new already. My oldest newborn I’ve had to date (I normally photograph them a lot sooner) and she was a dream to work with. I really hope I get to see her grow through my lens cause I think she already loves me!!! 😀
